Why Kelowna
What makes Kelowna, in British Columbia's Okanagan, a great place to live.
The setting
Kelowna is in the Okanagan Valley, in the southern interior of British Columbia. It lies along Okanagan Lake, a long lake surrounded by hills, and it is the largest city in the Okanagan. It is a mid-sized city, with the services of a city but a much more relaxed pace than a big metropolis.
Climate
The Okanagan is known for warm, dry summers, which suit swimming, boating and time outdoors. Winters are cooler, and snow is common in the surrounding hills. The four seasons are distinct.
Outdoor life
The lake, the parks and the nearby hills support swimming, paddling, cycling, hiking and golf in the warmer months, and skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Easy access to nature is a big part of the appeal for many people.
Wine country and orchards
The Okanagan is one of Canada's best-known wine regions, and the valley also has a long history of fruit growing, including orchards of apples and cherries. Wineries, farm stands and local food are part of everyday life.
Things to weigh
Every place has trade-offs. Summers can be hot, wildfire smoke can affect air quality in some years, and living costs vary, so check them for yourself. Visit in more than one season and speak with people who live here before you decide.
